Lesson 1 - E-safety |
|
Key term: E-safety, (a.k.a. Electronic safety) encompasses not only Internet technologies but also
electronic communications via mobile phones, games consoles and wireless
technology. It is concerned with the need to educate people about
the benefits, risks and responsibilities of using information technology.
Key term: Internet troll, slang is a person who sows discord on the Internet by starting arguments or upsetting people, by posting inflammatory, extraneous, or off-topic messages in an online community (such as a newsgroup, forum, chat room, or blog) with the deliberate intent of provoking readers into unemotional response or of otherwise disrupting normal on-topic discussion
Class discussion: Why do people 'troll' online?
|
|
Examples:
> 99.9% of cases where personal information gets into the wrong hands, the result is theft of money > Police say there is a big problem with social media and mobile phones posting your location as it shows others when you are not at home and they can burgle your house |
|
Remember, we are not saying don't make friends online or never meet up with someone in person you have met online, we are saying take the same precautions online that you would offline, if not more.
For example would you share you mobile phone number or holiday photos with a stranger that you had just met in the street? What are you risking if you accept a facebook friend request from someone you don't know, how much personal information have you posted there? If you do ever want to meet someone in person that you have got to know online, make sure you do two things: 1. Meet in a public place 2. Go with an adult |
